Artwork licensing

Emoji data and emoji artwork are two different things with two different licences. This page states plainly what this site hosts and what it does not.

Emoji data

Names, codepoints, categories, version history and keyword annotations come from the Unicode Character Database and Unicode CLDR, © Unicode, Inc., used under the Unicode Terms of Use. This data is freely redistributable and is served in full through the public API.

Artwork we host

These sets carry licences that permit redistribution. Their artwork is stored, converted and served from this site's CDN, with attribution.

    Artwork we do not host

    These sets are proprietary. This site does not store or redistribute their images. Where a rendering is shown for one of these platforms, it is drawn by your own device using its installed emoji font — which on that vendor's own hardware is the authentic rendering anyway.

      Running your own instance

      The asset pipeline is licence-aware rather than licence-blind: proprietary platforms are skipped by the automated importer unless an operator explicitly enables them via the ASSET_PLATFORMS setting, which is the deliberate act of asserting you hold the necessary rights. Artwork you are licensed to host can also be supplied directly through the admin uploader.
